Begging, hawking ban in buses

Any sort of begging and hawking will be banned inside private buses from May 01, Sri Lanka's Private Bus Owners' Association's (SLPBOA) President Gemunu Wijeratne said.

He said that the powers have already been vested with the Motor Traffic Act to implement this ban.

Begging and selling inside private buses have been a common practice and several measures taken to discourage it have proved futile earlier. However, from May 01, the SLPBOA is to take strict measures to curb this menace.

"We have already given instructions to drivers and conductors in this regard. Accordingly, if any beggar or seller try to enter the bus forcibly, they will be arrested by the Police," he said. "We hope that Police will assist us to implement this ban," he said.

"We have received many complaints from commuters that beggars and sellers caused many danger and threat for both passengers and bus operators. They disrupt law and order," he further said.

Meanwhile, begging and selling inside Sri Lanka Transport buses and trains have also been prohibited from April 1.
