Transport Minister Kumara Welgama said he would take immediate measures to modernize and upgrade the basic facilities of the Central Bus Stand (CBS) in Pettah for the convenience of the general public, bus operators and staff of the CBS.

Minister Kumara Welgama inspects the Central Bus Stand

He made these remarks after an observation tour of the CBS yesterday morning.

The Minister after the inspection of the dilapidated conditions of rest rooms of drivers and conductors who stay there after their long-distance turn, instructed officials to provide basic facilities including a complete sanitary system and to repair rest rooms.

The Minister stressed the necessity of implementing a punctual bus service which would cater to the needs of commuters coming from various parts of the country to the CBS without any hassle.

The Minister took measures to deploy more buses after discussions with relevant officials for the Colombo-Kandy and Colombo-Pugoda routes where people were waiting for a long time without buses.

The Minister’s surprise visit was admired by drivers, conductors and passengers who were in the CBS. They alleged that no authority had listened to their grievances earlier.
