Fire of Spain ignited at MLH

Eating out in Spain is relatively cheap and meals are usually substantial instead of gourmet. The Spanish tradition of Tapas is a good way to sample the local food. But one tradition that is deep-rooted in Andalusia like American jazz lies soul to the US, flamenco dancing, a Spanish art form with emotion that if done right creates a profound moving experience. And indeed the Laura Segovia's flamenco dance troupe from Madrid on May 14 will definitely move you. The combination of acoustic guitar playing, singing, chanting, dancing and staccato handclapping with the synonymous attributes performed by the dancers will be the highlight at the Empire Ballroom which will be transformed to a Spanish Bodega.

Flamenco dance by Laura Segovia flown especially from Madrid by Qatar Airways will perform an expressive dance form that mixes percussive footwork with intricate hand, arm and body movements backed by the band La Tuna along with Javier Garcia Guest Chef from Spain that will also highlight the tradition of Spain with reference to whetting your appetite will be on the cards.

Dishes like Judiones de la Granja White Beans Segovia Style, Lentejas a la Espanola Lentils with potatoes, Bacalao al ajo Arriero Codfish with garlic and pimenton, Caldereta de Cordero Lamb couldron, pork sirloins with apple and Paella, a very famous type of rice synonymous for Spain are some of the dishes that Chef Javier will cook up.

Ceylon Continental celebrates Avurudu

Tradition was accorded pride of place when the Ceylon Continental Hotel celebrated Avurudu in an atmosphere of optimism and camaraderie this year.

Guests, invitees and hotel staff mingled in happy companionship as they participated in the boiling of milk, lighting of the traditional oil lamp, the playing of the rabana, singing of folk songs and traditional games such as Pancha Dameema and Olinda Keliya. A cultural show featuring several dance acts added a touch of glamour to the day's proceedings.

Guests were treated to a sumptuous buffet of festive food and traditional sweetmeats without which no Avurudu ceremony is complete. Sri Lanka's first five star hotel, the Ceylon Continental is now owned and managed by the Hayleys Group.

Starting from this month, Long Feng and Royal Thai, the two signature restaurants at Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo, will be offering set meals during lunchtime for those who want a delicious meal in a hurry.

The lunch menus at Long Feng would include an array of dishes such as vegetable spring roll, spicy Chinese soup, fish with black pepper, chicken with sambal sauce, green vegetable in garlic sauce, sea food fried rice, Chicken with dry chili, sliced lamb with black pepper, pakchoy with mushroom, Yan chow fried rice, broccoli with garlic, chicken with fried rice, chocolate chip crème brûlée, dark and white chocolate mouse pyramid and fresh fruits. Meanwhile, the menus at Royal Thai would include specialties like fried fish cake with green bean and sweet chili sauce, Tom Yam seafood soup, clear vegetable soup with glass noodles, Fried rice with vegetables, vegetable red curry, steamed rice, green curry of chicken, stir fried spicy mushroom with basil, stir fried snapper with chili paste, coconut ice cream and fresh fruit. With a choice of set menus for each restaurant, guests could take their pick and enjoy a delicious lunch!

There is a Jewish proverb that says 'God could not be everywhere and therefore He made mothers.' On Mother's Day (now universally acknowledged as the second Sunday in May in most parts of the world), this is the sentiment that drives us to show our mothers how much we really love and care about them, in spite of the heartache we cause them sometimes!

Sunday, May 9, is Mother's Day, the day set apart to honour and appreciate those wonderful women we call Amma, Mother, Mum, Mama or any other name that is special to them alone. This Mother's Day, Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo has planned a variety of ways in which you could express your love.

The Dining Room offers an absolutely delicious Sunday Lunch on Sunday, May 9 from 12.00 noon- to 3.00pm, where you could give your mother a real treat.

This buffet includes delicacies such as honey roast Virginia sugar ham, turkey roll with cranberry sauce, Norwegian smoked salmon, batter fried prawns, oysters and more!

Your mother would also receive a glass of sparkling wine on arrival and take away a family photograph, with compliments of the hotel. Also on offer is music by Jazz Dynamos.

Running in tandem with the Sunday Lunch is the Kids' Bash at the Lakeside Garden an ideal opportunity for children to make gifts for and pay tribute from the depths of their little hearts to their mums.

On the agenda for the day are some Mother's Day games making a special card, decorating a cake with Chef for her or describing your mother in one sentence as well as the chance to win some great prizes! There is also a yummy buffet including mini pizzas, burgers, fish n' chips, unlimited ice cream and popcorn, free use of the pool, inflatable pool toys, face painting and other games and movies for the children to enjoy!

The Sunday Carvery at 7 Degrees North, too, takes on a sweet touch on Mother's Day, with a complimentary box of chocolates for every table! Moreover, this traditional Sunday culinary delight, which is open from 12 noon-3 pm.


Love is in the Eclair

Like a sweet mirage, the eclair's origins are hazy. Little is known about its beginnings, but it is known to have originated in France around the turn of the nineteenth century. Many food historians speculate that éclairs were first made by Marie-Antoine Carême (1784-1833), a famous pastry chef for French royalty.

Éclair is the French word for lightning. It is believed that the pastry received its name because it glistens when coated with confectioner's glaze.

The first known English-language recipe for éclairs appears in the Boston Cooking School Cook Book by Mrs. D A Lincoln, published in 1884. While its source is also unknown, 22 June is celebrated as Chocolate Éclair day.

Many food critics believe the most accurate definition of the éclair is to be found in Chambers English Dictionary (1988), it defines an éclair as "a cake, long in shape but short in duration"!

This familiar, delectable cream-filled choux pastry, a favourite of many, makes its appearance in several guises this month! The range of eight éclairs includes Goodies' much acclaimed traditional chocolate éclair, as well as the more innovative cappuccino, strawberry and kirsch, lemon and chocolate chip, butterscotch and nougatine, almond, hazelnut and cream cheese and date.

A new attraction at CLC's Hopper Night

A new delight awaits those who go for the April edition of the Hopper Night at Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo, as the Sri Jayana National Dance Troupe puts on a cultural show for the benefit of the guests! This colourful and vibrant display of traditional dancing will take place during the evening, from 8.30 to 9.00pm. With their vast repertoire, beautiful costumes and enlivening music, their performance is sure to be a hit!
