Lions outplay Sylvestrians 110-0
S.M. Jiffrey ABDEEN- Kandy Sports Corr.
Trinity College trounced St. Sylvester's College, Kandy by the huge
margin of 110 points (5 goals, 15 tries) to nil in a friendly pre-season
rugby encounter played at Pallekelle on Saturday. At half time lions
38-0.
The Trinitians were earlier scheduled to play a side from the Army
but this did not come off and a match against the Sylvestrians was
hurriedly arranged. It must be said that the Sylvestrians were not
really ready to 'Kick off' but they agreed to the request by the
Trinitians.
This match turned out to be a one sided affair with the lions
dominating in all departments of the game which resulted in them moving
the ball with gay abandon and a glut of tries were produced.
Skipper and hooker Damith Dissanayake showed pleasing form and made
in roads into the defence of the Sylvestrians to score four tries and
vice captain No. 8 Shenon Armstrong in addition to stopping the
Sylvestrians from entering the lions territory also put up a fine
performance to plant four tries.
This perhaps was too much for the Sylvestrians and they succumb to
pressure after the turn around allowing the lions to cut loose in the
second half to score as many as 72 points.
The other try scorers were Kanchana Ramanayake (3), Akila Dissanayake
(2), S.I. Perera (2), Duminda Nayaratne (2), Rehan Weerakoon (1), Asif
Ainaf (1), Mohamed Shashar (1), Rukmal Dodantenna (1). Nimesh Yatawara
added the extra points to five of the tries.
