No action taken to preserve frescoes

Decaying frescoes Picture by M. A. R. Manukulasooriya

The antiquities of historical importance at the Rammandapokuna Temple in Kekirihenpitiya, Gokarella in the Ibbagamuwa D.S. Division are fast decaying and will be lost for ever unless early action is taken to preserve them.

According to the Chief Incumbent of the temple, Ven. Minigamuwe Rathanapala Thera, no research has been carried out in this historical site by the Archaeological Department so far. It is believed that the temple was built during the reign of King Keerthi Sri Rajasinghe. A large portion of the frescoes are decaying with the plaster peeling off.

A foot print of Lord Buddha carved in stone can also be seen here. There are many stone pillars, guard stones and other ruins of historical importance scattered in the site.

The Chief Incumbent of the temple and the residents in the area request the Archaeology Department to look into this matter and take action to preserve these invaluable antiquities.
