Richmond storm into semis with sensational win over Nalanda
Chris DHAMBARAGE
Richmond College Galle made a spectacular entry into the semifinal
with a stunning 12 run victory over Nalanda College on the Duckworth and
Lewis scoring method in a key Munchee inter school under 19 knock out
limited overs cricket tournament quarterfinal match worked off at the
Moors SC ground in Braybrooke Place yesterday.
Richmond College raced to 104 for 2 from 31 overs to overcome their
opponents on a superior scoring rate after Nalanda College had earlier
rattled up an impressive 194 for 9 from their 50 overs.
Opener Yasoda Lanka led the run chase with an aggressive 44 which
included nine boundaries. He really made use of the field restrictions
during the power play overs that helped Richmond College to stay ahead
of the required run rate throughout the innings.
Skipper Kasun Prabodha then further consolidated their position and
added the finishing touches with an unbeaten 31 when bad light halted
play after 31 overs.
Earlier Nalanda College electing to bat first after winning the toss
got off to a promising start and looked set to pile up a big total. But
with the introduction of the spinners the Nalandians lost wickets at
regular intervals and struggled to reach even two hundred runs. Middle
order batsman Adeesha Nanayakkara, Sineth Gunawardena and Chandimandu
Rodrigo made useful contributions but they did not have enough support
from the rest of the batting.
Irosh Sanjaya and Harith Madushan formed an effective spin
combination for Richmond College as they came back magnificently to
restrict the powerful Nalanda batting for less than two hundred runs.
Richmond College will now take on their traditional rivals Mahinda
College in the second semifinal on Friday at the CCC ground in Maitland
Crescent.
Nalanda: 194 for 9 in 50 overs (A. Nanayakkara 37, S. Gunawardena 35
n.o, C. Rodrigo 28, I. Sanjaya 3 for 40, H. Madushan 2 for 26).
Richmond: 104 for 2 in 31 overs (Y. Lanka 44, K. Prabodha 31 n.o).
Cambrians edge out DSS
Prince of Wales College put up a tremendous performance to beat D.S.
Senanayake College by two runs on the Duckworth and Lewis scoring method
in their Munchee inter school under 19 knock out limited overs cricket
tournament match worked off at the CCC ground in Maitland Crescent
yesterday.
After they were bundled out for a modest 160 runs the Cambrians came
back strongly through their bowlers to restrict their opponents to 100
for 5 from 33 overs and pull off a close victory.
Prince of Wales did well to capture three early wickets including the
prize scalp of Charitha Jayampathy during the power play overs and
succeeded in putting the opposition on the defensive from the very
beginning.
As a result D.S. Senanayake always struggled to be ahead in the run
rate and lost a couple of more wickets before bad light halted play
early in the 33rd over.
Vasuki Wetakepotha and Malshan Gunasinghe made a desperate attempt to
repair the early damage but unfortunately they fell short by two runs
from the required run rate.
Earlier Prince of Wales too struggled with the bat with Chamod
Wickremasinghe, Malshan Gunasinghe and Mohamed Ijaz causing heavy damage
while sharing seven wickets between them.
Prince of Wales will be up against Royal College in the first
semifinal match scheduled for Thursday at the CCC ground in Maitland
Crescent. The final will be worked off on Sunday at the same venue.
Prince of Wales: 160 in 44.3 overs (N. Chamara 35, I. Thilina 33, C.
Wickremasinghe 3 for 29, M. Gunasinghe 2 for 21, M. Ijaz 2 for 25).
D.S. Senanayake: 100 for 5 in 33 overs (V. Watakepotha 24 n.o, T.
Silva 19, M. Gunasinghe 25 n.o, S. Jayasuriya 2 for 22).
