H'tota Port:

First phase to end in Oct - Minister Chamal Rajapaksa

The first phase of the seaport at Hambantota will be completed by October and filled with water, Port and Civil Aviation Minister Chamal Rajapaksa said.

The first ship will leave the seaport in December, the Minister said addressing a meeting at Poulier Watta, Ambalantota yesterday.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa presided.

Minister Rajapaksa said 28 industrial ventures will be set up providing jobs for Southern Province and adjoining district youths.

Tissamaharama electorate is the only electorate in Sri Lanka where a seaport and an airport will be constructed.

Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe had said that the construction work of the seaport at Hambantota has been limited to words, Minister Rajapaksa said. He said Tylvin Silva too has expressed a similar idea. The Minister said he will invite Tylvin Silva to the Hambantota seaport when it is filled, to have a fresh water bath.
