Moscow attack
Horrible reminder of continuing terrorist violence - President
President Mahinda Rajapaksa expressing his concern and deep sorrow at
the suicide bomb attack at two Moscow subway stations Monday stated that
this attack is a 'horrible reminder of the continuing terrorist violence
that affects the world today, which needs concerted action by the world
community to eradicate it with the greatest speed, irrespective of
political or regional interests'.
'As a country that has suffered enormously under terrorism for nearly
three decades, Sri Lanka is well-aware of its harsh realities,
especially how it threatens the progress of a nation and peace and
tranquility among people', the President further stated in his message
to Russian Federation President, Dmitry Medvedev.
We also recall with gratitude the constant and significant assistance
that the Russian Federation extended to Sri Lanka to achieve success in
our battle against separatist terrorism, he added.
According to AP, 36 people were killed in the two suicide bombings on
Moscow's subway system Monday. Officials say two female suicide bombers
blew themselves up on trains as the subway was packed with rush-hour
passengers Monday morning, the report further said.

I hasten to express to you and the people of the Russian Federation
our grave concern and deep sorrow at the suicide bomb attack at two
Moscow subway stations yesterday.
I wish through Your Excellency's good offices to send a message of
condolence to the families of those killed and extend our prayers and
sincere good wishes for the speedy recovery of those injured in this
brutal attack.
We see this attack as a horrible reminder of the continuing terrorist
violence that affects the world today, which needs concerted action by
the world community to eradicate with the greatest speed, irrespective
of political or regional interests.
As a country that has suffered enormously under terrorism for nearly
three decades, Sri Lanka is well aware of its harsh realities,
especially how it threatens the progress of a nation and peace and
tranquility among people. We also recall with gratitude the constant and
significant assistance that the Russian Federation extended to Sri Lanka
to achieve success in our battle against separatist terrorism.
The people of Sri Lanka join me in wishing Your Excellency and the
Government of the Russian Federation every success in its continued
battle to defeat terrorism in all its forms, and express our solidarity
with the Russian people in this important task.
