Vegetable prices down

The present low vegetable prices is set to further decline with the ample stocks of fruits and vegetables arriving from Jaffna to the Dedicated Economic Center in Dambulla.

A DEC Spokesman for in Dambulla told the Daily News that the prices of several vegetable items have already dropped in the market as a result of over 100 metric tonnes of vegetables and fruits continuously arriving from Jaffna.

He said that fish, vegetables, rice and fruits produced in the Jaffna district are daily sent to Dambulla through the A-9 road by truck and lorries.

Large stocks of Jaffna produce including beetroot, potatoes, red onions and bananas are daily received by the DEC in Dambulla with the commencement of the harvest season during the last few weeks.

As a result of the continued supply, the wholesale prices of beetroot has come down to Rs.45 from Rs.80. The price of potatoes has declined from Rs.120 to Rs.55 while the price of red onions has dropped to Rs.45 from Rs.80.

The price of Koli Kuttu has come down from Rs.110 to Rs.65.
