Multi-faceted Charitha

Charitha Priyadarshani Peiris is a songstress who had delighted fans for 23 years. She is also an announcer who has addressed radio and television audiences over 25 years.

Charitha was one of the earliest announcers of ITN on which she presented for 14 years, the weekly program Kala Rasanga with Francis Wanniarachchi. She presented the women's program Siri Medura.

Charitha is also an announcer on Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC). Ambiga Geethayen Geethaya entertainment program which she presented with her father, veteran journalist Ariyadasa Peiris, deserves a special mention. In the programs Mathakaye Rendunu Gee and Eda Apa Dutu Chitrapatiyakin presenting vintage songs, she extolls to the younger generation, the value of preserving the old.

She is a news announcer. For the last 22 years, she has been a familiar face on the Development Lottery program Shanida Wasanawa on National Rupavahini. Charitha is an A Grade singer on SLBC and a radio drama artiste.

She has been a playback singer for several films, tele films and stage plays., Mal Kekulu Pokuru Vagei, the song she sang for Punchi Petaw tele play, directed by Somaratne Dissanayake in 1987, is still popular among children.

Charitha has been a singer and a presenter of concerts in America, Canada, England, France, Germany, Italy, Austria, Netherlands, Australia (Sydney Opera House), New Zealand, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Dubai, Kuwait, Doha Qatar, Bahrain and Maldives.

At the fourth 'Maco' Award ceremony held last year by Mass Communicators Association of Sri Lanka, Charitha received a special honorary award for linking the past and the present and for seeking varied spheres of aesthetics.

In 1988, she penned music for the song Dalvalamu Api Eka Iti Pahanak, presented by 100 artistes for Women's International Day.
