Van used for trafficking heroin seized

Kalpitiya Police yesterday seized a van abandoned at Moor Street, Thithdeniya, Puttlam that was used to transport 30.6 kg of heroin. Police Spokesman SP Prishantha Jayakody told the Daily News that the Police are conducting investigation to arrest the driver of the vehicle.

Meanwhile the Batticaloa Magistrate has remanded two suspects of Batticaloa who demanded a ransom of Rs 50,000 from a nurse to give her back her hand bag. They were remanded until March 01.

The nurse of the Batticaloa Hospital had lost her bag at the St Anne’s Church, Batticaloa on February 8. Batticaloa Police is conducting investigations.

Avissawella Police has on Sunday arrested one of the two suspects who had allegedly snatched a gold chain worth Rs 70,000 near the Dehiovita old bus stand. He had come with another person in a motor bicycle to commit the crime. The Police has seized the chain and the motor bicycle as well. The Police are conducting further investigation.

Weliveriya Police has arrested two suspects on Saturday who allegedly robbed boots worth Rs 412,800 from DI Company at Rathupaswala in Weliveriya on February 18. The Police seized boots worth Rs 385,280 from a shop in Meegoda.

The two suspects were from Yakkala and Homagama. The Gampaha Magistrate ordered to remand them until February 25.

A motorcyclist died when his motorcycle collided on Sunday against a private bus near the Aluthambalama Junior College on Avissawella Main Road. The victim died at the Colombo National Hospital and the driver was arrested with the bus by the Police.
