Sesath Arts Awards ceremony

The Sesath Arts Awards ceremony is scheduled to take place at Wennappuwa Sir Albert F. Peiris Indoor Stadium on February 23 at 4.30 pm.

The event will be held under the patronage of Wennappuwa ‘Magulgedara Artistes’ Assocation and the behest and guidance of ‘Sesath’ creator W. Senaka Prasad.

Two special awards representing the Wennappuwa area are billed to be presented to veteran cinema actresses Nita Fernando and Moreen Charuni. Also billed to be awarded are ten photographers, three journalists, six make up artistes, four costume artistes and three chefs from the area.

Janatha Estate Management and Development Minister Milroy S. Fernando, former Skills Development Minister Dayashritha Tissera, former Deputy Speaker Priyankara Jayaratne, former Fisheries Minister Neomal Perera, former Member of Parliament Mary Laryn Perera, former Minister Festace Perera, Vayamba Provincial Minister Arundika Fernando and Wennappuwa Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Trevin Fernando are expected to be the Chief Invitees on the occasion. Also expected to be present are a large number of provincial and pradeshiya sabha members.


State Children’s Art Festival 2010

State Children’s Art Competition 2010 has opened its primary round for entries, Cultural Department Director E.M. Abhayaratne said on behalf of the competition’s joint organizers Cultural and National Heritages Ministry and Cultural Affairs Department.

18’ X 14’ paper should be used. Overleaf of the painting should have details of name, date of birth, age up to March 15, competitive section entered into, private address, telephone number and permanently resident district and a certification that the work of art is the entrant’s own effort.

All paintings must be posted or handed over to Secretary, National Art and Sculpture Sub Committee, National Art Gallery, Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha, Colombo 7, before March 15.

150 entries will be selected from one district and directed to the second round. After a one-day workshop, the entrants will be required to paint again.


Poli Mudalali no more


Martin Gunadasa

Actor Martin Gunadasa, popularly known as Poli Mudalali in the tele series Kopi Kade, passed away just days before his 80th birthday. He was laid to rest at Borella cemetery on February 11.

Gunadasa’s film debut was in Sarawita in the sixties. He acted in about 30 films including Hathara Maha Nidhanaya, Hathara Wate, Kapatikama, Indunila, Kalana Mithuro, Sinawai Inawai, Pick Pocket and Ada Mehemai. He also appeared in several teledramas and produced around ten of them. He was a seasoned singer and a musician as well.

 

 

 


Upanda Maranaya at John de Silva

The first staging in 2010 of the play Upanda Maranaya will take place at John de Silva Memorial Hall on March 2, at 6.30 pm. Written, directed and produced by Nalaka Vithanage, the play combines the acting talents of Amiththa Weerasinghe, Dulika Marapana, Bandula Vithanage, Kingsley Laws, Prasad Suriyarachchi, Ayesha Dissanayake and Upali Bandara.

The students of Lyceum International School, Wattala, won first place in the Inter-International schools’ category at the All Island Schools’ Dancing Competition held recently. The students took part in the Kandyan Dancing Segment.

The girls presented the Mayura Wannama and the boys followed it up with the Surapathi Wannama. They clinched first place in both categories.

 

 

 


M.D.S. Gunatilaka exhibits paintings

M.D.S. Gunatilaka, generally regarded as the most veteran water colour painter in Sri Lanka, will exhibit his work in Colombo Art Gallery on February 17 from 2 p.m. The exhibition will be declared open by Minister of Posts and Telecommunications M.D. Nandana Gunatilaka who is a son of the artiste.


Book launch

Mahinda Wimalasena’s latest Sinhala novel Ranaviruvakuge Birinda was launched at Dayawansa Jayakody Book Exhibition Hall, Colombo 10 on February 16. The book is a Dayawansa Jayakody Publication.
