Women shooters win two silver medals

Sri Lanka women shooters made the country proud when they captured silver medals in the 60 shots prone and 25 metre sports pistol in the shooting discipline at the National Sports Shooting Complex.

Dimuthu was accurate in scoring 584 points followed by Wasana Kumari 579 points and Panchika Ramani 576 points collected a grand total of 1,739.

E. N. Pabawathi, Ruvini Abeymanne and G. A. D. Wijeratne was responsible for the second silver shooting perfectly.

Sri Lanka medal tally rose to 26 - 3 gold, 11 silver and 12 bronze. Yesterday the Lankans won 2 silver and 7 bronze.

The second batch of competitors numbering 97 from Sri Lanka with high hopes of winning a number of medals arrived in Dakha yesterday in a special charter flight.

The competitors include athletes, swimmers, table tennis players, wrestlers and taekwondo teams.

While these 97 competitors arrival, 85 Sri Lankan competitors who gained success and defeat, left on the same aircraft back home. Cyclists, footballers, judo, kabbadi and weightlifters are the competitors who have completed their events.

Badminton

Fresh from their men’s and women’s team golds, Indian shuttlers remained on course for more by advancing into the finals in the men’s singles, women’s singles and mixed doubles.

Sri Lanka lost all their matches in the semi-finals of the badminton tournament played at Woodenfloor Gymnasium.

Mixed doubles - Aparna Balan / S. Thomas beat Chandrika de Silva / Niluka Karunaratne 2/0.

Women singles: Trupti Murgunde beat Thilini Jayasinghe 2/0.

Men’s singles: Chetan Ananda beat Dinuka Karunaratne 2/0.

Women’s doubles: P. C. Thulasi / Ashwini Ponnappa beat Chandrika de Silva / Nadeesha Gayanthika 2/0, Aparna Balan / Smiti Kurien beat Achini Ratnasiri / Upuli Sewandhika 2/0.

Men’s doubles: Chetan Ananda / Diju Velyiateti beat Rajitha Dahanayake / Chanaka Hewa 2/1. Sri Lanka were able to win six bronze medals in badminton.

Cricket

Pakistan gained a 91 run win against Nepal in the Twenty/20 cricket tournament played at Shahid Zamruzzanan Stadium Rajshai.

Pakistan 173 for 2 (20 overs).

Nepal 82 for 8.

Soccer

Sri Lanka soccerites chances of entering the semi-final of the football tournament was demolished as India thrashed Pakistan 5-1 in the last match in the group ‘B’.

Other soccerites who collected 4 points from two games, one win against Pakistan (1-0) and a draw against India (0-0) were lying second to Afghanistan with three wins (9 points).

India and Pakistan match decided the semi finalists India with a better goal aggregate got through.

So in the group ‘B’ Afghanistan and India booked their berth to the last four.

In the Group ‘A’ host Bangladesh and Maldives qualified to the semis.

Bangladesh defeated Nepal 3-0 and beat Bhutan 4-1. Maldives won both their matches with identical 1-0 wins against Bhutan and Nepal.

In the women’s football Sri Lanka did not show up to expectations and bowed out of the tournament.

Volleyball

Pakistan scored a straight 3 sets to 0 against Sri Lanka in the semi final of the volleyball tournament played at Soharawardy Indoor Stadium.
