Two new varieties of tea plants introduced

The Tea Smallholding Authority has introduced two new varieties of tea plants belonging to the TRI 3000 and 4000 series which are resistant to drought and diseases.

It also gives a better crop than the other varieties.

Steps have been taken to propagate these two new varieties of tea among cultivators through the tea plantations belonging to the Tee Shakthi Tea Factory of Mawarala as packeted plants and pure cuttings. Cultivators could obtain cuttings from the newly introduced high grade tea plant species for their nurseries from this tea estate.

The Mawarala Tea Plantation has already issued some 165,786 cuttings for smallholder cultivators.

Meanwhile, 6,000 cuttings of the new cloned 4,042 variety of tea had also been issued among tea cultivators in Beralapanatara, Dampahala Tea Inspectors areas for re-planting.
