Alawwa sees increase in dengue patients

The number of dengue patients in the Alawwa area is increasing daily. Two hundred and ninety three dengue patients have been identified from the Alawwa MOH division and out of them seven have died, said Medical Officer of Health, Alawwa Dr. Sunil D. Silva.

Dengue Menace
* Nawathalwatta: 119 patients

* Maharachchimulla: 53 patients

* Waduwawa: 32 patients

He made these observations at a seminar held at the Alawwa Divisional Secretariat office auditorium to make Grama Niladharis aware of the dengue fever epidemic.

Dr. Silva said that 119 patients are reported from Nawathalwatta, 53 patients from Maharachchimulla, 89 patients from Alawwa and 32 patients are reported from Waduwawa.

"We all should get together and implement a special program to control the situation. We have planned to set up operation committees on Grama Niladhari division level to make the people aware of the dengue epidemic.

"We have made arrangements to make school children aware of this," he added.

Public Health Inspector (administration) Upali Pathiraja said there was an increase in mosquito breeding places in and around residences.

Rain water collects in roof gutters, water storage tanks, drains, ornamental plants, items in improperly disposed garbage and provides for breeding.

Two thousand six hundred and thirty six dengue patients have been identified from the Kurunegala district by now.

Most are from Alawwa, Narammala, Polgahawela, Pannala and Rideegama areas.

No Dengue patients are reported from the areas where dry climatic conditions prevailed, he said.

"We request the public to take immediate steps to eliminate mosquito breeding places in their immediate environment and prevent the spread of Dengue fever," he added. Divisional Secretary, Alawwa K. A. Jayawardene also attended this seminar.
