Deniyaya Police apprehended a UNP activist who allegedly attacked and
damaged a house of UPFA supporter at Kiriweldola in Deniyaya. The
suspect had broken into the house with another man and damaged the
house, Police said. Deniyaya Police are investigating to arrest the
other suspect who is missing.

New faculty building

The ceremony of laying the foundation stone for the clinical building
of the Faculty of Medicine and Allied Sciences of Mihintale Rajarata
University will be held today in the premises of Anuradhapura Teaching
hospital.
University Grants Commission Chairman Professor Gamini Samaranayake,
Rajarata University Vice Chancellor Professor K. A. Nandasena and
Rajarata Medicine Faculty Dean Prof. Malani Udupihilla will participate
in the ceremony as special guests.
A. G. Karunaratne the Registrar of the Rajarata University told the
Daily News that the proposed building would cost the Government Rs. 700
million.
Baby's body found

The body of a two day old baby was found by police dumped behind the
Thotalanga bus stop in Pagnananda Mawatha, Modera on Monday evening.
Acting on information, Modera police found the two day old baby's
body packed in a polythene bag and left near the Oxygen Company in
Pagnananda Mawatha, police spokesman SSP I.M. Karunaratna said.
"The Security Guards of the Oxygen Company had seen the baby's body
and informed Modera police," he added.
However, he said no suspect was found. The post-mortem was conducted
at the Colombo National Hospital.
Modera police are investigating.
Gang fires at bus killing woman

A woman was killed when a gang opened fire at private bus around
12.30 p.m yesterday by unidentified suspects in Thalunna area, Hungama,
Netolpitiya, police spokesman SSP I.M. Karunaratna said.
He said the private bus plying from Tangalle to Tissamaharama was
followed by men on a motorcycle who fired at the bus.
“Two men in the motorcycle fired at the bus. A woman injured in the
shooting was admitted to Matara hospital. She succumbed to her
injuries,” he added. The victim was identified as K. Kusumawathy 58, a
resident of Imbaduyaya, Vithurandeniya.
He said the suspects fled from the area. The motive behind the
killing was not known. Hungama police are investigating.

Three-wheel drivers fined
Matale district group corr.
Four three-wheel drivers who violated the road rules, were convicted
for the offences, were fined Rs. 12,000 by Dambulla Magistrate/district
judge Maheshika Dhanansuriya. They were residents in Wilgamuwa and
Galewela areas. The Galewela and Wilgamuwa police led the evidence. |
