Lanka spends Rs 136 b a year for drugs

Sri Lanka has one of the best free healthcare systems in the world and spends over Rs 13 billion per year only on drugs. But unfortunately certain trade unions see the health system as the worst in the world and act to gain political advantages without coming up with constructive criticism, Healthcare and Nutrition Ministry Secretary Dr. Athula Kahandaliyanage said.

Health Services, Director General Dr. Ajith Mendis said drug shortage was caused because certain contaminated drugs were banned and the ban imposed was not only on the contaminated batch but on the entire drug stock.

In similar occasions countries such as US banned the contaminated batch only.

A team is now in India with special Cabinet approval to buy drugs through the Embassy. The drug shortage will be over within a week, he added.
