‘Claiming a donkey while being a horse’
Indika Polkotuwa
Opposition Presidential candidate Sarath Fonseka claims that he will
introduce a constitution which ensures powers to the Parliament while
saying that he will not act also as a nominal President.
This is somewhat like his claiming to be a donkey while being a
horse, Public Administration and Home Affairs Minister Dr. Sarath
Amunugama said.
Speaking at the Kandy District conference of the working class held
at the Postal Auditorium, Kandy on Monday under the title ‘Let us ensure
the victory of Mahinda once again,’ Dr. Amunugama said that a
Constitution comprising a dual system of an Executive Presidential
System alongside a Parliament with similar powers wouldn’t be
practicable and added that one of these two alone should be vested with
such executive powers.
We cannot have a Constitution with equal powers to both the President
and Parliament. One of these should be in the form of an elder brother
and the other younger brother.
Otherwise, the two cannot be elder brothers at the same time and
there would be chaos indeed, Dr. Amunugama said.
