Speaking at a press conference at his Ministry in Colombo yesterday,
the Minister said the President and the CWC face the people with what
they have done for them.
But others go to the people with new promises, he added.
Referring to Sarath Fonseka's promises on the wage increase of Rs
10,125 for plantation workers, Thondaman said at present if a worker
works for 25 days a month he draws the same amount.
He said the people know what the CWC and President Rajapaksa had done
for the past four years. The Minister pointed out that the two members
who left the Congress should have decided to resign before nominations
were called. They too agreed at the National Council of the CWC to
support the President, and added that he did know what made them resign.
They had every right to raise any issue at the National Council, he
said.
Answering a question whether he behaved like a dictator as told by
the dissidents, Thondaman said he was the General Secretary from 1991
and that during these nine years they did not say anything about this.
The Minister said the CWC would not conduct any election campaign for
two days as a mark of respect for UPF leader P. Chandrasekeran. He added
that the UPF leader was a family friend though they belonged to
different political parties. |
