President Mahinda Rajapaksa will be the chief guest at a get-together of members of the ‘Vidudaya-J’pura Vidyartheenge Ekamuthuwa’ (Alliance of Vidyodaya and Sri Jayewardenepura University Graduates) to be held in Colombo on January 10 at 8 a.m.

Graduates of these two universities who wish to attend are requested to contact the Alliance operations office at No. 210, Dam Street, Colombo 12 on telephone 011-2434487 or fax number 011-4741890 for further details and invitations, said Alliance General Secretary P.G. Rupasinghe.

He said the get-together has been organised to pledge support to President Rajapaksa at the forthcoming Presidential elections to ensure his victory and defeat UNP-JVP attempts to foster a military dictatorship in this country.


Lecture by Imam Abudul Alim Musa

A lecture on ‘Islam and the West: Which one represents global danger?’ organised by the Moors’ Islamic Cultural Home along with the Al Islam Foundation will be held on January 4 at 6.45 p.m. at the 5th floor of the MICH reception hall, No. 7, Lily Avenue, Colombo 6.

The lecture will be delivered by American scholar Imam Abdul Alim Musa, the chief of As Sabiqun Movement and the founder and the Imam of Masjid Al Islam which has its centres in the States of Washington DC, California and Pennsylvania.


Emergency phone No 114

Sri Lanka Army Headquarters has allocated an emergency telephone number 114 to enable the public to inform the Army about any suspicious incidents in Colombo and its suburbs that may have an impact on national security, Army official Spokesman Brigadier V.U.B. Nanayakkara said in a press release yesterday.


Man nabbed with Buddha statue

A resident of Kolonna has been taken into custody with eight pieces of a brass Buddha statue at Vilavila by Yakkalamulla Police.

The Buddha statue is 20 inches in height and 14.5 kg in weight. Police has reported the incident to the Archaeological Department.


Murder suspect remanded

Panadura Magistrate Dhammika Dissanayake remanded a person who is the husband of a slain woman in connection with the death of his wife. It is alleged that after an argument between them, the husband allegedly poured petrol on her body and set fire.


Errant trader fined

A trader at Panadura pleaded guilty of keeping expired essential food was fined Rs 5,000 by Panadura Magistrate Dhammika Dissanayake. Kalutara Branch of the Consumer Protection Authority prosecuted.


The annual Pirith chanting ceremony organised by the National Cadet Corps Seva Vanitha branch held recently at the Rantembe Training Centre, to invoke blessings on President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Defence, Public Security, Law and Order Ministry Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, the Government and the people for a prosperous New Year under the patronage of Major General Gamini Jayasundara, National Cadet Corps Director Priyanthi Jayasundara, the Seva Vanitha Unit President, Officers, Cadets and other rankers also participated.
