Women play vital role in society - Minister Amunugama
Eventhough the political scene is dominated by the male population
ironically, the number of female voters is higher than that of males.
Around 51 percent of women cast their votes in comparison to 49
percent of men at any given election, said Public Administration and
Home Affairs Minister Dr. Sarath Amunugama. The Minister was speaking at
a women’s seminar at Hedeniya in the Kandy district.
Minister Amunugama said we should not put forward petty politics for
each and every issue. Social development should take precedence over
party politics. He said women play a vital role in bringing foreign
exchange to our country. Housemaids generate the highest in foreign
exchange earnings amounting to around US $ 3.4 billion per annum.
Women in the garment industry and estate sector also make a big
contribution to the Lankan economy. This goes to show the pivotal role
that women play in the economic development of the country.
Minister Amunugama said that today’s women are more smarter and
courageous than their male counterparts. Women who yearn for a brighter
future will join hands with the Government’s development program to work
for a better tomorrow. |
