Past four years: Hive of cultural activity
Cultural Affairs and National Heritage Minister Mahinda Yapa
Abeywardena stated that the Ministry had carried out many proposals
introduced in the Mahinda Chinthana during the past four years.
Many important constructions have taken place, including the Sigiriya
Museum, the SAARC Cultural Center, the National Arts Center and the
National Performing Arts Theater. Special emphasis has been placed for
the preservation of archaeological sites. The concept of cultural tours
to popularize cultural heritage has been developed together with the
introduction of the national cultural concept.
In a bid to uplift the national film industry, scholarships and other
facilities were extensively provided for artists. The National Artists
Fund was also implemented.
The National School of Theater and Drama was started by the Tower
Hall Theater Foundation under the guidance of the Ministry. Action is
being taken to develop the school to the grass roots level, carrying its
benefits to rural areas. Village cultural societies were also
introduced.
Various cultural programs have been conducted in 153 cultural centers
islandwide. These were conducted by specialized cultural officers and
cultural development officers. The programs had been used in a wide
arena, ranging from village to urban, with the aim of recognizing and
showcasing talents of the people as well as spiritual revival. |
