Tourism renaissance
Irangika Range
The Government is planning to develop the beautiful stretch of sandy
beaches in Kayts and Karainagar islands in Jaffna for tourism under the
Uthuru Vasanthaya project.
Northern Province Governor G. A. Chandrasiri said plans are afoot to
develop popular Kasurina beach in the Karainagar island and Welanai
beach in the Kayts island as tourist attractions.
These two beaches Kayts and Karainagar islands were recently opened
to public under the patronage of Social Services and Social Welfare
Minister Douglas Devananda and Northern Province Governor G. A.
Chandrasiri.
The Governor said this section of the Northern coast gives the
picture of a tropical beach dotted with palm trees, white sandy beaches
and blue waters.
“The plan would recognize potentials, elaborate a holistic vision and
present qualitative and quantitative development of the area,” he said.
Under the Karainagar island development program construction work on the
access road entering the island has been expidited. A tourist hotel with
modern facilities in the Kasurina beach of the Karainagar island will
also be built.
The Karainagar Pradeshiya Sabha has already commenced development
activities of the beach and its surrounding to attract tourists. In
addition, the Welanai Pradeshiya Sabha has commenced development of the
Welanai beach.
Other major attractions of these sandy beaches include shallow waters
for swimming, surfing and diving. “That is why we plan to develop the
area to attract local and foreign tourists,” he said. |
