Rs 89,000 m for health

Only Rs 34,000 million was allocated to the health sector in Sri
Lanka in 2004 under the UNP regime. This Government allocated Rs 89,000
million for this sector in 2009.

This amount will be increased up to Rs 2,700 billion by next year, a
Healthcare and Nutrition Ministry spokesman said.
According to the spokesman the amount allocated to purchase drugs in
2004 was Rs 4000 million.
This amount was increased to Rs14,000 million in 2009. Healthcare and
Nutrition Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva had stated this yesterday
during a meeting at the ministry to recruit 150 new radiographers.
The minister had also pointed out that during the past four years,
5,500 new doctors were added into the national service. According to
statistics revealed by Minister de Silva, apart from major development
drives launched in the health sector covering the whole country to
upgrade main state hospitals, the ministry has spent over Rs 11,000
million to construct building complexes for the State hospitals. |
