Unrestricted travel on A9 from today

All restrictions for travel on the A9 road to and from Jaffna will be
lifted from today and the Government was taking all steps to develop
Jaffna to its former status as one of the best district capitals of the
country Senior Presidential Advisor Basil Rajapaksa MP said yesterday.
At a meeting organized by the All Ceylon Hindu Congress in Colombo he
said though the attack by Al Qaeda on the US was many years ago the US
had not relaxed security to prevent a repetition. "We were however able
to achieve peace in a short time," he said.
The Government was now focusing on preserving democracy, ensuring the
rights of all the ethnic groups and aiming to develop the economy. At
present, development of the North was one of the high priorities Basil
Rajapaksa said.
In addition to the infrastructure development Jaffna would get an
international sports stadium and a theatre and cinema complex. An
Engineering university of Jaffna would also be opened soon and its
Agriculture faculty would also be opened at Kilinochchi shortly he
noted. Speaking further Senior Presidential Advisor Basil Rajapaksa MP
said the resettlement of IDPs was progressing smoothly and de-mining
operations were quickened with new equipment received by the Government.
