The Government yesterday started the direct SLTB bus service between
Jaffna and Kandy along the re-opened Kandy-Jaffna highway(A-9).
A Transport Ministry spokesman said that the first bus services were
launched yesterday morning from Jaffna and was scheduled to reach Kandy
last night. Meanwhile, the return journey from Kandy to Jaffna was
scheduled to commence from Kandy last evening.
Earlier, the bus service along the Jaffna-Kandy highway (A-9) was
operated only up to Vavuniya from both destinations.
The bus service on the Jaffna-Kandy highway was discontinued for
nearly a decade as the area beyond Vavuniya was under LTTE control.
He said that soon after the completion of demining and the
construction of the A-9 highway which was badly damaged by LTTE
terrorists, the authorities took measures to commence the service with
immediate effect to facilitate Jaffna bound civilians.
Under the first stage, three buses will operate between Jaffna and
Kandy and two buses from Kandy to Jaffna daily. |
