Fourteenth International Forestry and Environmental Symposium

To mitigate adverse impact of Climate Change :

The Department of Forestry and Environmental Science of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura will hold the 14th International Forestry and Environmental Symposium under the theme 'Developments in Forestry and Environmental Science in 2009' from December 18-19 in the Forestry Auditorium of the University.

The 14th International Symposium on 'Developments in Forestry and Environment in 2009' coincides with the most important international climate event of the century, the COP 15 Climate Change Summit that is being held from December 7 at Copenhagen in the Netherlands.

The importance of this meeting is that it is expected to take appropriate action to mitigate the adverse impact of Climate Change in the wake of the ending of the Kyoto Protocol which is operative until 2012.

Therefore, the findings of research and reviews in a multitude of areas in connection with environment and natural resources including forestry presented at this symposium will assist the implementation of the measures that will be taken at this meeting.

The Symposium on Forestry and Environment also coincides with the Golden Jubilee of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura.

The unique feature of the Symposium is that it provides a stage for research scientists, planners and policy makers, implementers in the field of natural resources to present their research findings to their peers and also to the policy makers and implementers, personnel from a wider cross section of society including the private sector so that these findings can be put into use without being shelved.

About 210 research and review papers will be read at this symposium under the sub themes 'Natural Resource Management, Waste Management and Pollution Control, Forest Products, Green Solutions in Development, Ecology, Biodiversity, Biotechnology and Tissue Culture, Climate Change and Socio-economics in Environmental Conservation.

Research papers from India, Africa, UK and Australia will also be presented at the Symposium on novel development efforts in the arena of forestry and environment.
