Under the leadership of President Mahinda Rajapaksa those who had
attempted to divide the country failed. But the statements made by the
Opposition candidate had only pleased the divisive forces at home and
abroad, UPFA General Secretary and Education Minister Susil Premajayanth
said yesterday.
Addressing the UPFA press conference at the Mahaweli Centre, Colombo
he said people would not wish to give high responsibility to the
Opposition candidate though he was aspiring to be a leader of the
country as his statements were harming the country.
The Government had informed the Attorney General about the matter to
take appropriate action.
Power and Energy Minister W.D.J.Seneviratne said the statement in
question was an attempt to turn back the victory of the Armed Forces who
defeated the LTTE terrorists and the news report showed that it had been
a well planned move.
“A person who wants to take power to run the country has made so many
controversial statements during the past few days.
He does not seem to understand political developments nor does he
have any political experience. He is backed solely by two bankrupt
political parties,” Seneviratne said. Engineering Services and
Construction Minister Dr.Rajitha Senaratne said during the campaign of
the ancient King Dutugemunu there were many Generals, one was Gotabhaya,
one was Nandimitra and there was only one army.
Today however there was the army, the navy and the air force.
Today our forces had defeated the terrorists and the Opposition
candidate is being defended by a politician who said he was not fit even
to be the commander of the Salvation Army.
Dr. Senaratne said at present the products of Royal were defeated by
a man from the village who is used to wear the sarong and shirt.
Therefore such elitist people entertained a hatred towards the
leader. JVP’s aged leader Somawansa Amarasinghe now saying that he was
prepared to go much further than the 13th Amendment but all these people
possess one common factor – vindictive politics of the opportunist.
“UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe visits Frankfurt, UK and India and
other countries playing the elitist role in the election campaign.
The comrades of the JVP are going from wall to wall, street to street
carrying bucketfuls of paste to put up posters. That was the place the
JVP had in this campaign while the UNP was moving with the elites”,
Senaratne said.
