Country’s reputation compromised
Mass Media Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena said Sarath Fonseka had
greatly damaged the international reputation of Sri Lanka through
irresponsible statements in an interview with The Sunday Leader.
Speaking in regard to the statement issued by Fonseka to The Sunday
Leader, the Minister stated that Sunday Leader Editor Fredrica Jansz
could not have misinterpreted the statement.
The Minister stated that the particular newspaper was already facing
a Court case and was prohibited from mentioning Gotabhaya Rajapaksa’s
name if not explicitly mentioned by those interviewed.
If not the newspaper would be guilty of contempt of Court.
Fredrica Jansz further stated yesterday that she had reported
Fonseka’s statement exactly as stated.
The Minister stated that Fonseka’s statement had led to a widespread
international outcry. This will pose a major problem for all future
leaders. Sri Lanka’s damaged reputation had been slowly recovering
through much diplomatic effort. However, through Fonseka’s statements
this position has been reversed.
Fonseka had said that the Sunday Leader Editor had quoted his
comments out of context.
The Minister queried how such a person who contradicts his own
statements could be fit to hold the supreme office of the country.
