Prabha reigns, Nurul takes ladies title

The 122nd Sri Lanka Amateur Open Golf Championship which began on Wednesday and concluded on Saturday at the Nuwara Eliya Golf Club Course - ended on a highly successful note for the 28-year-old Prabagaran.

The former Sri Lanka champion, Prabagaran, on Thursday partnering K.A. Chandradasa bagged the Parlakimedia Trophy for the International team event and, on the final fourth round on the last day he with a gross score of 280 was 9 strokes ahead of his closest rival Hossain Sohel 289 of Bangladesh, to become Sri Lanka’s Golf Champion for the year 2009. The reigning champion, Mithun Perera, was not in the island to defend the title he won last year, and it was left to Prabagaran to stave off the challenges that came from the golfers of Pakistan, India and Bangladesh to get on top and eventually triumph in the end.

On the opening day with an array of 50 golfers, Prabagaran carded a par 70 to hold the first place, while the Bangladeshi, Sohel, had 8 over par 78 to be placed second. The positions were reversed in the second round with Prabagaran having 2 over par 72 and Sohel notching a par 70.

In the 3rd and fourth rounds Prabagaran registered one under par 69 in each round and had an over all score of 280 which gave him victory over Sohel who registered scores of 2 under par 68 and a 3 over par 73 to have an aggregate of 289 after 4 rounds to rest content with second place. K.A. Chandradasa came in third 290. Excellent golf was witnessed during the four days with quite few birdies and an eagle thrown in for good measure.

In the ladies match play championship the strongly fancied favourite Shyanika Fernando, did play well to get past the quarter and semi-finals, but in the finals Shyanika had to contend against 16-year-old Malaysian, Nurul Shahirah, who played excellent golf in rain affected condition to win 3/1.
