UoM team wins world prize

The University of Moratuwa (UoM) has won a world prize in IEEEXtreme
Competition which is the world's most extreme programming competition.
Moratuwa University Engineering Faculty Dean Professor Ananda
Jayawardena said that the university team 'Mora Seekers' won this among
721 from over 40 countries and it is the first time a country in the
Asia Pacific Region won this coveted IEEEXtreme global competition.
He said that this competition is a global 24-hour online contest
where student teams of three around the world solve a challenging set of
programming problems.
The competition started at 00.00 hrs on October 24 and continued for
24 hours. The students had to solve real world problems and provide
solutions in languages selected by IEEEXtreme.
Out of 11 teams that represented the IEEE student branch of Moratuwa
University , two other teams secured the 26 and the 50 places. The
members of the winning team Lalintha Polpitiya, Chetiya Abeysinghe and
Parinda Jayasitri are Bsc Engineering students from electrical,
electronic and telecommunication departments. Lalintha, also the IEEE
student branch President at Moratuwa said "We didn't have the pressure
of winning, what mattered was the participation and enjoying the
learning experience. However, when we knew that we were leading the
online ranking table we were determined to stay at the top."
The students must be members of an IEEE (Institute of Electrical and
Electronic Engineers) branch. IEEE is the world's largest professional
organization for advancement of science and technology with 365,000
members in over 160 countries. RK |
