SLFP convention on massive scale

First party confab after liberation:

Over 100,000 supporters expected:

The Sri Lanka Freedom Party’s National Convention will be held on November 15 at the Khettarama Stadium, Colombo under the theme of ‘Let us now build the country’ to consolidate the victory gained after elimination of terrorism.

Maithripala Sirisena

Addressing the press in Colombo yesterday, SLFP General Secretary and Agriculture Development and Agrarian Services Minister Maithripala Sirisena said arrangements have already been made to conduct the National Convention on a grand scale with the participation of about 100,000 party members from all over the country under the leadership of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

In terms of the SLFP constitution, the convention will proceed under four major themes namely politics, economy, national unity and future.

The Minister further said President Rajapaksa will reveal a number of important decisions taken at the Central Executive Committee of the SLFP.

The Minister said this was a significant event which is being held for the first time in Sri Lanka after the restoration of total democracy in the country.

Representatives of all constituent political parties and overseas branches have also been invited for the convention and there is great enthusiasm among the party cadres and activists.

Over 35 representatives of major political parties in other countries are invited to participate in the convention. “We have received a number of congratulatory messages and best wishes from foreign and local political parties for the occasion,” he said.

All arrangements have been made to hold the convention with the participation of a massive crowd expected at the event led by district and electoral organizers of the SLFP.

Party cadres from the grassroot level upwards are working enthusiastically for this National Convention. “We want party members at organizational level to be more active for the future progress of the party,” he said.

The SLFP has conducted 18 National Conventions in the past under the leadership of late Prime Minster S.W.R.D Bandaranaike, late Prime Minister Sirima Bandaranaika, former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and present President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

As a whole, a number of important decisions on behalf of the people and the country had been taken under SLFP regimes. “We have been able to increase rapport and links with many foreign states while protecting our national identity and giving priority to the indigenous values and culture under every SLFP regime,” he further said.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s regime can be considered as ushering in a golden era in the country as terrorism which plagued the country for the past 30 years has been eliminated under his brave leadership. This is a historical landmark of the nation as four political leaders who ruled the country previously failed to achieve this goal.

He said that Sri Lanka showed an example to other countries how to eradicate terrorism despite a host of challenges poised at national and international level.

Today the SLFP has emerged as a very strong party under the vibrant leadership of President Mahinda Rajapaksa who defeated terrorism within just three years.

Healthcare and Nutrition Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva said people of the country are living with new aspirations and hopes after the defeat of terrorism. “They have kept their confidence in President Mahinda Rajapaksa and his leadership”, he added.

The SLFP together with its alliance parties are fully committed to fulfill their obligations to the maximum.

He said the SLFP is confident of victory at future elections since a two-third majority has been received from the voters in several provinces at the recent Provincial Council elections.
