Music widens horizons

Harsha Ariyasinghe is yet another versatile artiste who proved his talents in music, dancing and stage drama. His seeds of artistry cultivated since his school days at Dharmapala college, Pannipitiya. He studied music and dancing under the guidance of Chandrani Gunawardana and Dayasena Liyanage. Harsha was a popular actor on school stage. He directed some school dramas when he was a student.

His passion for music and dancing gave him the opportunity to widen his horizons in many forms of performing arts. Harsha studied ballet dancing from a Rassian ballet instructor. He further studied music, dancing drama and film directing during he was in Japan.

Harsha emerges on popular stage with Premranjith Thilekaratna's 'Sriwickrama' stage drama. Later he directed several short ballets with his own music compositions. His experimental musical drama 'Yakshayage kiri sihinaya' acclaimed by audiences was a great succuss in his carrier.

Harsha has composed melodies to many a popular artists. Amarasiri Peris, Nirosha Virajini, Kasun Kalhara are few of them to name. The melody he composed to Sangeeth Wijesooriya's 'Meemata be' song is a true proof of Harsha's musical talents. He hopes to produce a CD album of his melodies in near future.

Being in the field of performing arts for more than three decades Harsha believes that all forms of arts must practice with patience. "Performing arts has become a 'Mania' with the 'star' shows. Making an overnight 'artiste' is merely a joke. It takes a long time to make a good artiste. These instant 'stars' will soon be faded just after the shows. Talent alone will not be the key to be a good performing artiste. Constant practices under good guidance and deep study about the subject will help you to absorb the true essence of performing.

Exam oriented education system has led the arts education to a tragedy. Even though we have talented, qualified artists, we are struggling to find good performers for our creations," said Harsha.

With the aim to provide good guidance in the field of performing arts Harsha started the Colombo Theatre Council. Started as a forum of young drama enthusiastic under graduates from Horana Sripali University, Colombo Theatre Council has grown up to a performing arts academy. With the assistance of qualified university lecturers they conduct dancing, music, drama and ballet courses. Apart from that they conduct a special course for pre-teens between year 6and 12. A free seminar for O/L drama and theatre students will be held on November 15 at No.375, Sinhala Cultural Centre, Colombo 7. Students can obtain information about the seminar on phone No. 0786052835 or from the Colombo Theatre Council, 244/1, Miriswatta junction, Piliyandala.
