Coming out on top to be girls singles champion was China's, Siyu Qin,
in the ITF Junior tennis tournament yesterday at the SLTA courts when
she defeated India's leading player Tarrannum Handa.
Both Qin and Handa were very consistent in the week long competition,
where they got through the preliminaries the quarters and semi-finals
and here in the finals the contest seemed evenly poised. Qin was
impressive in the first set and won the second set saw her being
stretched to the extent of conceding the set to Handa after a bitter
struggle.
In the deciding final set Qin held her own to stamp her authority to
win it easily and the tie.
In a hard fought tie for the boys doubles title a determined Chinese
combination of Zhaoyl Cao and J.N. Tao put up much pressure against the
Sri Lankan duo of Amresh Jayawickrema and T. Dineshkanthan. Sri Lankan
pair combined well to just win the first set, in the second set they had
to battle hard to win it and doubles title.
