Ratnayake MMV retains Tarbat Shield

Twelve records tumble on final day:

Twelve new meet records were established while two were equalled on the final day of the 79th Senior Schools Athletic Championship for the Sir John Tarbat Shield, concluded at the Sugathadasa Stadium, Colombo yesterday. Altogether a total of 19 new records were established at this meet which was conducted by the Sri Lanka Schools Athletic Association.

Ratnayake M.M.V. Walala retained the Boys overall championship with a total of 150.5 points while Sumana Balika Vidyalaya, Ratnapura won the Girl’s Overall Championship having collected 209.5 points.

Shehan Ambepitiya, Gateway College, Rajagiriya who bagged three gold medals and went on to set a new meet record which for the boys 200m was named as the Best Athlete. He also equalled his own record in the boys’ u-20 100m event clocking 10.73secs. J.A.N Shashipraba Jayasinghe of St. Joseph’s Girls’ School, Kegalle was awarded the Best Girls Athlete Award.

Udara Silva of Maris Stella College, Negombo was named as the Best High jumper

while S.D.U.A Dikmadugoda, Anuradapura M.M.V.was selected the Best Long Jumper of the meet.

The closing ceremony took a festive air with 800 school children taking part in a colourful display under the patronage of Minister of Sports Bandula Basnayake and External Affairs and Activations Manager Nestle Lanka Bandula Egodage.

The meet was sponsored by Nestle Lanka Ltd. the distributors of ‘Milo’

D.A.H Weerasinghe, St. Joseph’s Girls School, Kegalle set a new record in the under 20 girls 100 m hurdles clocking 14.27 secs to erase the old which stood at 15.1secs set by T.D Dissanayake, Seewali M.M.V, Rathnapura in 1998.

R.A.C Jayamini of Sumana Balika Vidyalaya, Ratnapura set a new record in under 18 girls 3000m timing 10.18.35 secs. to lower the old record 10.43.01 secs. set by L.D Premaratne, Ratnayake M.M.V. Walala in the year 2002. Other records established of the final day

100m Hurdles U - 16 Girls: K Perera, Holy Family Convent, Colombo - 15.43 secs.

100m Hurdles U - 16 Boys: K.D.S.U Randeniya, Ranbima Royal College, Gannoruwa - 13.35 secs.

100m hurdles U - 18 Girls: G.I.S Dayananda Ferguson High School - 14.83 secs.

110 hurdles U - 20 Boys: K.P Hasitha Nirmal, Henagama Centra College, Henagama - 14.75 secs.

400m Hurdles U - 20 Boys: N.H Senavirathne, Joseph Vaz College, Wennappuwa - 53.85 secs.

Javelin Throw U - 18 Girls: H.I Hansima Sumana Balika Vidyalaya, Ratnapura - 38.6m

400m hurdles U - 18 Girls: L.D.N Gimhani Sumana Balika Vidyalaya, Ratnapura - 1:02.82 secs.

1500m U - 18 Girls: R.A.C Jayamini Sumana Balika Vidyalaya, Ratnapura - 4:44.94 secs.

4X400m relay U - 16 Girls: St. Joseph’s Girls School, Kegalle - 4:08.92 secs.

4X400m relay U - 20 Girls: St. Joseph’s Girls School, Kegalle - 3.59.80 secs.

Record equalled are

100m U - 20 Boys: Shehan Ambepitiya, Gateway International School, Rajagiriya - 10.73 secs.

110m Under - 18 Boys: M.H Saleemdeen, Trinity College, Kandy - 14.70 secs.

Under - 16 Champions Boys: Gateway College, Rajagiriya - 50 points

Girls: St. Joseph’s Girls School, Kegalle - 51 points

Under - 18 Champions Boys: Ratnayake M.M.V. Walala - 81.5points

Girls: Sumana Balika Vidyalaya, Ratnapura - 100 points
