Ecuador supports Peruvian Pact
Peru: Ecuador supports a South American non-aggression pact held by
Peru, stated Ecuador’s Ambassador Diego Ribadeneira, which emphasized
its anti-arms character.
“We are against arms industry and we believed that President Alan
Garcia’s proposal deserves our support” stated the diplomat.
He added that armament worries lots of countries in the region, which
should use their resources to end with poverty.
The diplomat highlighted the meeting of Vice Minister of Foreign
Affairs and National Defense with chiefs of Peruvian and Ecuadorian
armed forces, which will take place in Quito next October 15 and 16. It
is a demonstration of how both countries favor cooperation and not arms
build up.
Regarding the purchase of airplanes to Venezuela, Ribadeneira stated
they are to take care of Amazonian territory and to fight drug
trafficking. Peruvian non-aggression project is just a statement but it
is considered as positive and ought to be analyzed by Argentinean
Ambassador at Peru Dario Alessandro.
This proposal presented last month in a meeting of Ministries of
Foreign Affairs and National Defense of the Union of South American
Nations (UNASUR) has been rejected just by Chile, which considers it out
of context. This rejection is among the diplomatic tensions between
these two countries because of a dispute on maritime borders. Lima,
