Weerakkody to sponsor 7-a side soccer tourney

Former Sri Lanka and Kandy Sports Club ruggerite Nalaka Weerakkody will sponsor the invitation inter club seven a side soccer tournament organised by Hylines Sports Club, Kandy which will be worked off at the Dangolla Municipal grounds, Kandy, this Sunday at 9 a.m.

The winners of the invitation soccer tournament will be awarded the Nalaka Weerakkody Challenge shield and cash Rs. 25,000. The Runners-up will be presented with Nalaka Weerakkody Challenge Shield and cash Rs. 15,000. In addition to this there will be also cash prized for individual performances.

In the afternoon the foundation stone of the two storied club house of Hylines Sports Club will be laid and gracing the occasion will be former Minister of Sports and Kandy District Parliamentarian Lakshman Kiriella, Mayor of Kandy L.B. Aluvihare and Nalaka Weerakkody.

Hylines Sports Club is one of the oldest soccer playing clubs in the hill capital and they are now playing in the Dialog Premier League Soccer Tournament.

In addition to this every year they have been organising Invitation Soccer Tournament for the promotions of soccer in the area. The construction of the two storied club house will give a tremendous boost to this club to promote not only soccer but also indoor games.

Nalaka Weerakkody who has been played for Sri Lanka’s junior nation team before devoting more time to rugby, has represented Hylines Sports Club at National Level Competition in the past.

He is now in the garment trade and is expected to make a substantial contribution towards the construction of the two storied club house, thus giving back to the where he played in his formative years.
