SPC schools closed tomorrow
All Provincial and National schools in the Southern Province will be
closed tomorrow due to Southern Provincial Council election September 9,
Education Ministry Secretary Nimal Bandara said.
Cigarettes to minors: Traders fined

Warakapola Magistrate Prabha Kumari Dela imposed a fine of Rs.1,000
each on eight traders who sold cigarettes to minors in the Alawwa town.
The raids were conducted by Alawwa police and Kurunegala Excise
Department officers.
Eligible for productivity award !
S. Joseph, a resident of Hawa Eliya in Nuwara Eliya had posted two
newspapers, duly stamped, to an address in Kerawalapitiya in Wattala on
August 1.
The mail had finally reached its destination after two months on
October 1. Snail mail, indeed!
Death of former ANCL staffer
The death occurred on Tuesday of former ANCL staffer K.A. Nimal
Piyasena of No 23/1 Polhengoda Road, Narahenpita. He was the father of
Ravindra Piyasena of the ANCL Commercial Printing Department. Besides
Ravindra he leaves his wife Malani and son Duminda. His remains are
lying at Jayaratne Florists, Borella. Cremation takes place at the
Borella cemetery on October 8.
Badur Mowlood
The recital of Badur Mowlood will be conducted by Al Haj Moulavi M.T.
Hillurudeen (Falahi) and Al Haj Moulavi A.B.M. Mubarak (Falahi) on
October 8 after Magrib Prayers and will continue until Isha Prayers at
the Nawala Jummah Mosque.
Lankan antique collector loses valuables in India
A Sri Lankan native, now a citizen of the United Kingdom and an avid
antique collector, lost his bag with 28 sovereigns of gold jewellery, US
dollars 3,350 and two cellphones on his way back from an antique
showroom in Royapettah in Chennai on Tuesday evening.
Thyagarajan, who had come to Chennai with his family a week ago,
approached Royapettah police yesterday and lodged a complaint about the
missing bag. Thyagarajan told police that after arriving in Chennai a
week ago he was staying with his family in a hotel on Poonamallee High
Road, in Kilpauk.
He had taken a taxi to visit an antique shop in Royapettah on
Tuesday. After purchasing few antiques, he returned to the hotel and
found his bag containing the valuables missing.
Thyagarajan told police that the bag contained cash, his wife’s
jewels, and the cellphones. Police have picked up the cab driver,
Sivakumar, for questioning. Sivakumar told police that he had not
spotted an abandoned bag in the car. - The Times of India

Fisherman drowns
Kapila SOMARATNE
A fisherman drowned while seven others escaped when their boat
capsized in mid sea off Panadura Uyankelle on Tuesday. The fisherman who
drowned was Justin Fonseka, 32.
Another fisherman was admitted to the Panadura base Hospital.
Felicitation ceremony
Justice and Law Reforms Ministry has arranged a felicitation ceremony
to felicitate artists, public servants, poets, writers and reputed
persons of the Upcountry areas.
The ceremony will be held at PMD Cultural Hall, Maskeliya on October

Life sentence for heroin peddler

The Colombo High Court yesterday sentenced a person who was found
guilty of possessing heroin to life imprisonment.
Colombo High Court Judge Lalith Jayasooriya convicted Sampath
Senaratne for possessing 2.89 grams of heroin on December 29, 1999.
Senaratne was taken into custody at Maradana by Police led by Sub
Inspector Rajakaruna attached to the Maradana Police.
Police had taken him into custody at Sangarajah Mawatha with packets
containing a powder weighing eight grams. The Government Analyst's
Department confirmed it contained 2.89 grams of heroin. The Court
observed the case was proved beyond reasonable doubt.
Rat fever alert in Kalutara
Wadduwa Special Corr.
Twenty-three persons affected by rat fever (Leptospirosis) have been
detected by the health authorities at Kalutara upto September.
The disease has spread in Hewaliyangala, Gamagoda, Seruvita, Maha
Waskaduwa, and Kalamulla villages.
