After taking up law studies he passed out as an Attorney-at-Law in 1953 and started his practice in his new profession in which soon he became a popular member of the bar. He took great pains to appear for the underprivileged people of his district.

He also had joined the Sinhala Maha Sabha in 1947 and became one of its regional leaders who had understood the hopes and aspirations of the people. He was elected the Chairman of the Bingiriya Village Council as one of the youngest people to hold that position. In 1982 he was appointed the SLFP Organizer of the Panduwasnuwara electorate and worked hard to protect the rights of the SLFP members of the electorate facing many obstacles.

In 1989, he was elected a Member of Parliament from the Kurunegala district and was re-elected in 1994 and served the people as an efficient representative of the people who understood their problems well. He understood the irrigation systems and was responsible for starting a number of irrigation projects in the district. He also took steps to stop the illicit liquor production and use, that was becoming a menace to society, as an active temperance leader.

In 2001 he retired from politics but played an active role in religious and social activities and also played the role of the veteran politician counselling the younger politicians.

May he attain Nibbana
