Wesley’s cricket sixes:

Who will munch Munchee Glucofit?

The clash between Mahanama and Royal Institute, will be the curtain raiser in Wesley’s 17th annual six-a-side schools cricket tournament that starts on Friday October 16 and concludes on Sunday October 18 at the Wesley College grounds.

The tournament as in the past is being organised and conducted by Wesley and, is sponsored for the second successive year by, Ceylon Biscuits Limited. There are 36 teams competing for the Munchee Glucofit Trophy - with the defending champions being Prince of Wales.

This was made known to the members of the media by sports correspondent and TV Commentator, Roshan Abeysinghe, who conducted the draw in respect of the forthcoming tournament on Tuesday at the College Hall.

Present on the occasion was the Vice Principal of Wesley College, Rev. Shehan Fernando, Group Director, CBL, Nandana Wickramage, Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Tournament Committee, Capt. Navin de Silva and Jeremy Brohier respectively and the representatives of the participating schools amongst others.

As drawn and announced by Abyesinghe the preliminary first round matches on this three-day tournament are Mahanama vs Royal Institute, Thurstan vs DSS-St. Joseph’s (bye), Sri Sumangala Panadura vs Gamini Central Bentota, Moratuwa MV vs Batticaloa District, CWW Kannangara vs Prince of Wales, Hambantota District vs Trinity, Nalanda (bye) Basilica MV vs De Mazenod, St. Benedict’s vs Royal Panadura, Jaffna District vs Lyceum International, S. Thomas’ Mt vs Trincomalee District, Richmond (bye) Zahira vs Holy Cross, Wesley vs St. Peter’s, Ampara District vs Ananda Polonnaruwa District vs Royal (CBO)-St. Sebestians (bye) St. Thomas Matale vs Dharmapala, Joseph Vaz vs Asoka MV.

The rules governing the tournament as in the past, will be more or less the same, except that there will be for the first time the ‘Free Hit’ in operation.

An additional feature will be the under 19 girls match between Girls High School, Mount Lavinia and Presbyterian School Dehiwala on the final day.

There will also be an art competition on the theme ‘Munchee Clucofit Cricket’ sponsored by CBL, for Wesley’s young artists on the second and third day of the tournament.
