Navy rescues two stranded multi-day fishing vessels

Sri Lanka Navy rescued two Sri Lankan multi-day fishing vessels named 'Chejana' and 'Dinujaya' with 11 crew members on board while stranded in deep seas 160 nautical miles East of Point Pedro and 85 nautical miles East of Sangamankanda respectively.

One of the rescued vessels

The two fishing vessels had left Trincomalee and Mirissa harbours respectively to fish in deep seas. Due to prevailing rough seas and bad weather conditions, the vessels had developed engine trouble and subsequently started to drift. Sri Lanka Navy was contacted by the Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Department and informed of the plight of the two fishing vessels. As a response Naval ships Sayura and A 521 on deep sea surveillance were dispatched for assistance and the ships found the two fishing vessels drifting in deep seas.

Showing professionalism in rescue operations in deep seas even under bad weather and rough sea conditions, the stranded fishing vessels and their crew were rescued by the Naval ships.

SLNS Sayura brought 'Chejana' with seven crew on board to Trincomalee harbour on September 30. The other disabled fishing vessel 'Dinujaya' with four crew on board is being towed by A 521 and is scheduled to be brought ashore at Hambantota harbour.
