Beliatta student tops Year 5 Schol results

J. W. Promode Dilshan, a student of Ruhunu Wijayaba Maha Vidyalaya, Beliatta has secured the first place in the island passing the Grade Five Competitive Scholarship examination this year scoring 196 marks in the Sinhala Medium.

Logeshwaran Sri Kanthan, a student of Vaddukkottai Tamil Maha Vidyalaya came first in the Tamil medium scoring 192 marks.

"This is the first time in the history that a student from Hambantota district had obtained the highest marks in the Grade Five Scholarship examination." Examination Commissioner General Anura Edirisinghe told the Daily News yesterday.

Educational sources said that this is a development of special significance that the highest marks had been obtained by two students in the Sinhala and Tamil medium from Northern and Southern provinces.

There were 298,000 students sat the Grade Five Scholarship Examination held in August this year. About 31,000 students will receive bursaries and an opportunity to gain admission to Grade six classes of popular schools Edirisinghe said.

The minimum cut-off marks for eligibility for scholarships in Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara, Kandy, Matale, Galle, Matara, Kurunegala and Kegalle districts are 144 for the Sinhala medium students and 141 for Tamil medium students.

Minimum cut-off for other districts for the the Sinhala and Tamil medium students are as follows. Nuwara Eliya 138-136, Badulla 139-138, Moneragala 138-135, Ratnapura141-134, Polonnaruwa 138-140, Anuradhapura 139-138, Puttalam 139-137, Trincomalee 139-140, Ampara139-139,Vavuniya (Tamil)136, Mannar (Tamil)139, Batticaloa (Tamil) 139.

The examination results were uploaded into the Internet yesterday. Principals of schools in Colombo and the suburbs could obtain the results personally, Edirisinghe said.

The results of outstation schools will be sent to the respective schools by registered post.

Arrangements have been made to send the results of the students in relief villages in Vavuniya by next Tuesday, he added.
