Confucius family tree hits 2 m

About two million people are now recognised as descendants of Confucius, more than tripling the size of the celebrated Chinese philosopher’s family tree, the media reported.

The new list, which includes ethnic minorities, women and overseas relatives for the first time, was unveiled on Thursday in the thinker’s hometown Qufu to coincide with the 2,560th anniversary of his birth, the Global Times said.

Manila submerged

Manila was on Sunday covered by a sea of brown with islands of desperate people clinging to corrugated rooftops.

The devastation extended across vast areas of Manila after the heaviest rain in more than 40 years sent torrents of water up to six metres (20 feet) high streaming across the city on Saturday. The storm left at least 73 people dead and displaced more than 330,000, according to the government.

This year’s version of the annual crafts exhibition ‘Shilpa Abhimana’ organized by the Central Provincial Industrial Development and Business Promotion Department will be on November 12 and 13.

The ‘Shilpa Abhimana 2009’ will be held at Queen’s Hotel, Kandy.

Three villages from the Kandy, Matale and Nuwara-Eliya districts will be developed as Community Tourist Villages. Meanwhile, work on nine new rural electricity schemes has begun in the Nawalapitiya electorate.


Road reconstructed

The Polwatta-Ampitiya Road in the Mahanuwara Kadawath Sathara and Gangawata Korale Pradeshiya Sabha area in the Senkadagala Electorate is being reconstructed under the Jathika Maga Neguma Road Development program.


Chemistry diploma course

Applications have been called for the Popular and the recognized Diploma in Laboratory technology in Chemistry (DLTC) program in Chemistry conducted by the College of Chemical Sciences of the Institute of Chemistry, Ceylon. The students will be allowed to specialize food Science and Industrial Technology or Clinical Laboratory Technology.
