Betraying country before international community:
‘Ranil playing a dirty game’
UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has deviated from his role as the
Opposition Leader by betraying the country before the international
community. The Opposition Leader instead of working to make the people’s
aspirations a reality is engaged in a dirty game of persuading the
international community to stop assisting the country, said President
Mahinda Rajapaksa.
The President was addressing the Hambantota district SLFP activists
at Temple Trees yesterday.
The President said the Opposition Leader instead of leading the
opposition against the activities that are detrimental to the well-being
of the people, has launched a massive campaign against the country.
“He is calling for each and every country to stop lending assistance
to Sri Lanka which earned plaudits from the world for eradicating
terrorism.
An Opposition’s duty is to extend its fullest cooperation to the
Government to rebuild the country at this critical juncture for the sake
of the Motherland.
The President stressed that the people should be prepared to resist
the campaign launched by a segment of the opposition against the
Motherland. These elements are trying to act against the country at a
time when all Sri Lankans despite their political and racial
affiliations have gathered under one flag to rebuild the country.
President Rajapaksa said the UNP is struggling to secure the second
place today. “We have won the war on terrorism and war on development
alike. We have put the country’s development on the front line,” he
said.
The President added that work on five harbours are going on
simultaneously. This is the first time in the country’s history that
work on five main harbours are progressing simultaneously, he said.
He said the Government has launched a program to provide electricity
to almost all households in the Hambantota district. “We will provide
electricity to every nook and corner of the country shortly.
The development of road network is going on,” he said.
The country is focussing the Hambantota district at the forthcoming
Southern Provincial Council election. The people in the Hambantota
district have always come forward to save the country when it was in
peril. The country is hopeful that the people in the Hambantota district
will play a key role in the process of rebuilding of the country, he
added.
The members of the Maha Sangha, SLFP General Secretary and
Agriculture and Agrarian Services Development Minister Maithreepala
Sirisena, Ministers Chamal Rajapaksa, Nimal Siripala De Silva, Mahinda
Amaraweera, Southern Province Governor Kumari Balasuriya and Hambantota
district Parliamentarian Nirupama Rajapaksa were also present.
