SELA food crisis meeting in Venezuela
Venezuela: The Latin American Economic System (SELA in
Spanish) is expected to discuss in Venezuela this month the impact of
the global food crisis on the region and the actions to mitigate it,
SELA Permanent Secretary Jose Rivera confirmed on Thursday.
In remarks to Prensa Latina, Rivera said there is great expectation
among the 27 member countries of the bloc for this issue, which will be
discussed in the presence of international entities including the UN
Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO).
There is a great interest because of the topicality and importance of
the issue, he explained.
The agenda of the meeting, to be held on September 17-18 in Caracas,
includes food security, the increasing prices of products and probable
answers to these problems, according to Rivera.
SELA is worried about the current food trends in the planet and their
influence on Latin America and the Caribbean.
High food costs are likely to further increase poverty and inflation,
with nearly 10 million people likely to join the ranks of the poor in
the region, SELA has warned.
