Sunset

Colours of different shades
Purple, orange and red
Make the evening sky,
A beautiful painting
By the great artist,
Mother Nature.
The sun is retiring in the western sky
A day is ending
Adding another day to the past.
The darkness
Slowly sets in
And reigns the world.
Stars glisten,
Showing the way to the lonely navigators
Sailing in the vast sea.
Moonlit tree tops,
Shadows on the wall,
And quaint sounds,
Are all unique to the night atmosphere.

Return to my village

These transient relief villages
Are home for me now
But my home is on the coast
And it'll always will be

Some day I will return to
Our village and our farms
And we'll no longer burn
Taking arms at our brothers

Through the fields of destruction
We ran through the fire
I've witnessed your suffering
As the battle raged on

And though they hurt me so bad
In the fear and distress
You did not desert me
Taking arms at our brothers

There's so many different worlds
So many thousand suns
We have just one planet
But we live in different ones

The sun's gone to heaven
And the moon's riding high
Let me practice ayubowan
Every one has to die

Is it written in the cosmos ?
And every line on my palm
We're fools to make war
Taking arms at our brothers

Shadow

Days flew with the ticking hours,
Almost a month gone past,
Not a glimpse of your shadow...

Incessant rains overtook the sky,
Chilly winds blew in and out,
Darkness obscured the light and shine....

Anxiety grew with the counting minutes,
Eyes hunted for a fraction of illumination,
Still eager to catch a glance of your shadow...

Hope ceased with the fluttering seconds,
The future seems as endless as the horizon,
Will the destination reveal your shadow?

The pride of a pedagogue

A white lily
Unblemished by the sun;
The occasional smile
Which adorned her face
Beckoned the attention
- no wonder -
Of the young passer by.

A pretty little bud,
Yet to bloom, was she,
When I met her first.

The coy little lass
With glasses on her face,
When in her pensive mood,
Gave the notion
Of a real scholar.

Today, a matured young lady;
The pride of my career!
Eloquent in the Queen's Language,
My efforts not in vain!

A feather in my cap;
Most prominent and colourful,
My sweet little lass
A big lady today!

Words of knowledge

Knowledge is a wonderful gift
It broadens your view
And guides your thinking
It helps you make the right judgement
And enriches your life
Besides improving your vocational abilities,
It gives courage and inspiration
To a fruitful adulthood.
It's like a polished wall that glazes like a mirror.
Caressing divine with a heavenly touch
To take us to our destination
To securely remain protected forever.

Ode to our President

Greatness springs with determination
To achieve what has to be done!
Act well your part
Where all the honour shines
All religions are respected
Caste and creed in the same way.
Confidentially you conduct your life.
Criticism is a heap of dirt to you.
You greet people with hands up
A smile adorns your face
Wherever you are -
May you reign with peace and harmony
Heavens will shower blessings
Make Sri Lanka a peaceful isle.

A precious teacher...

Parents, teachers,
Are the pillers of light.
Clearing the path,
To be among the,
Winners...

The way you talk,
The way you work,
The way you move,
Are the most precious chapters,
For a junior to read

Sir, you are the most ideal person.
That we ever had,
To be addressed by the precious word
'The Teacher'

A tribute to ENT Surgeon, Dr. S. Selvarathnam

Dawn

Shy and fearful as a fawn,
Treading on sunrise comes dawn,
Peeping over the sea's roar
Coming from a faraway shore,
Engulfing the world in embrace
Chasing away darkness without trace.
