'Encourage investors'

The private sector and foreign investors should be encouraged to recommence development activities in the construction sector, said Chairman, Chamber of Construction Industry (CCI) Surath Wickramasinghe.

He was speaking at a function to felicitate three newly elected Vice Presidents at the Galadari Hotel last week. Wickramasinghe said that the construction industry suffered a setback over the past two years and the building sector is at a standstill even now. Over 38 high rise projects are on hold.

Some big-time contractors had transferred their permanent staff from the building sector to the infrastructure sector in their own organizations and thousands of non permanent employees were made redundant.

Since terrorism was eliminated three months ago in Sri Lanka, the economy is now starting to grow in the tourism sector, the stock exchange being more vibrant, the Central Bank foreign exchange getting stronger and the production in agriculture and fisheries also showing positive returns is a good indicator for the construction industry to also pick up in the near future.
