Sports goods for IDPs in Vavuniya

A ceremony to distribute sports goods among the clubs and sports bodies of the five IDP camps in the Settikulam area, namely Kadirgamar, Ananda Kumarasamy, Ramanathan, Arunachalam Camp and Zone 4 Camp, was held on Wednesday at Vavuniya under the patronage of the Minstry of Sports and Public Recreation.

There are more than 300,000 Internally displaced persons residing at those camps and the Ministry of Sports distributed Sports goods such as carrom boards, netballs, volleyball nets, stumps, cricket bats, tennis balls and chess boards etc. worth Rs. 1 .5 million along with kitchen utensils worth 1.5 lack.

The Minister of Sports and Public Recreations Gamini Lokuge who was the chief guest at the occasion said that the Ministry has taken steps to develop Duraiyappah Ground Jaffna in collaboration with the Governor of the Northern Provinces Major General G.A. Chandrasiri and upgrade the Vavuniya MV as a Sports School while providing sports facilities to schools in the Northern and Eastern Provinces. The ministry will also take action to hold a combined sports festival with the Northern and Eastern Provinces in the near future.

The Secretary to the Ministy of Sports S. Liyanagama, Director General, Department of Development Sports Bandula Dahanayake, Chairman National Olympic Committee Hemasiri Fernando, DIG (Wanni) Ravi Wijegunaratne, Brigadier Senaka Wickramaratne and Secretary to the Provincial Ministry of Sports, Education and Cultural affairs Lakshman Ilangovan were also present at the occasion.
