Former CMC Charity Commissioner indicted

Indictment was filed against former Charity Commissioner of the
Colombo Municipal Council for misappropriating 110 sewing machines worth
of Rs 1.4 million.
The Attorney General filed indictment with four counts against former
Charity Commissioner of CMC Hemantha Gamage before the Colombo High
Court for misappropriating the machines in 2005. In the same indictment
charges were filed against a driver of the CMC G. Kulathunga Silva of
Ihalabiyanvila, Kadawatha and a businessman I. R. Pushpakumara of
Waragoda, Kelaniya for aiding and abetting Gamage to misappropriate the
machines worth of Rs.1, 440,780.
The Police took the machines into custody with the driver at
Kiribathgoda. The driver told the police in his statement that he was
told by the Charity Commissioner to handover the sewing machines to
Pushpakumara.
Hemantha Gamage (47) of No. 1, White Park, Maligakanda Road, Maradana
stated that the machines were at the CMC store under his supervision.
The machines were bought by the CMC to be distributed among the low
income earners in the CMC area by Municipal Councillors.
The Commissioner denied the charges leveled against him. The
indictment consists of five productions and 13 witnesses. |
