Moragahakanda project resettlement begins

The resettlement program for displaced civilians of the Moragahakanda- Kalu Ganga project will start tomorrow under the patronage of Agriculture Development and Agrarian Services Minister Maitripala Sirisena in the Medirigiriya Mahaweli Development area.

The Mahaweli Authority has funded Rs.4,000 million for this project. They will resettle 1,997 farmer families and 36 business centres in Kabarawa, Elagamuwa, Kubiyangahaela, Gamimayaya, Thalagoda, Kadawatha, Galporugolla, Galboda, Medapihilla, Kongahawela, Rajawela, Maragamuwa, Moragolla, Millagahamulathenna and Kabarawa Garama Niladari Divisions in the area when the Moragahakanda tank will be built.

They will also resettle 597 farmer families, 34 business centers and give land for landowners who lived outside the area in Karadamulla, Gonawala, Pallegama, Miniranketiya, Halminiya, Rambukoluwa, Gangahenwala and Ranamure Grama Niladari divisions in the area of Kalu ganga tank.

The Authority will name this area as Mahaweli F system and hope to provide all facilities like in other systems. Under this project 2,000 hectares of land will be cultivated and 2,590 farmer families and 650 non-farmer families will be resettled.

The Mahaweli Authority hopes to cultivate wheat, cowpea , peanuts and other fruits and vegetables in the area.
